Historical Diversity and Representation in the Baldwin Library

This exhibit explores 20 important and diverse historical events in US history and how these events have impacted diversity in both children's literature and the children's literature archive. Texts for this digital exhibit are drawn exclusively from the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature at the University of Florida to reflect both the diversity in children's literature digital collections as well as the representations of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability over time. With each date or event, the exhibit will connect several books from the archive to the chosen historical events so they are in conversation with another. The use of historical events is important when contextualizing ideas of diversity and/or representations since they demonstrate what ideas were being circulated during the event and how it was presented to children. Presented chronologically, this exhibit works to provide education and to visualize a clear timeline of diversity in children’s literature.
